In scotland, McCairneys and MacCarneys from Monaghan are now mostly known as Cairneys, while in Monaghan (and bordering regions of Tyrone and Fermanagh and Armagh) they are present as Carney, Kearney and especially McCarney and McKearney.

According to ireland.com: ‘The Cearnach from whom they claim descent was a brother of Cosgrach, chief of the Armagh O’Hanlons.’

According to James Kearney Naureckas,at his website,  ‘There is also a MacCearnaigh (McCarney or McKearney) family, a comparatively young side-branch of the O’Hanlon family, an Ulster clan based in County Armagh.’
