The Cairney DNA study consists of data drawn from genealogically significant samples of human DNA: specifically, 12, 25 or 37 marker y-chromosome tests available from the familytreedna laboratory in Texas. These are 'male-line' tests, which can be counted on to show identical or nearly identical results between relatives in your particular line. The 'Deep' ancestral origins are made transparent (are you descended from Vikings or Celts, for instance) and more advanced genealogy is made possible (are you related to other Cairneys not in your family tree). The results are of course a powerful tool for reconstructing family history and sept/clan history when used along with more traditional historical sources.
